Sabbra

Cadabra

Is...

A. A mystical phrase used to invoke magic

B. A small country in the Middle East

C. A Black Sabbath Tribute Band

If you answered C, then you've obviously had the pleasure of seeing Sabbra Cadabra, the nation's number one Black Sabbath tribute band. Formed five years ago, band members Dan Toto (a.k.a. Tony Iommi), Tom Capobianco (a.k.a. Bill Ward), Jeff Mott (a.k.a. Geezer Butler) and Joe Donnelly (a.k.a. Ozzy) have painstakingly recreated the Black Sabbath experience. According to Tom, "Sabbra Cadabra fills the void that was left when Sabbath broke up. We're devoted to replicating not only the sound, but the look and feel of the band as well. We take people back through time. We're dedicated to keeping the sounds of Sabbath alive." Of course, ever the inquisitive journalist, I asked the obvious question: "Why form a Sabbath cover band?" The answer was simple: "Because Black Sabbath are gods." Duh! Joe added, "Besides, any really good bands in the '90s, like Soundgarden and Alice in Chains, stole their sound from Sabbath."

I recently got a chance to see these guys at the Wreck Room in Wallington, NJ, and I have to admit, even though I am not a big Black Sabbath fan, I was absolutely blown away. After seeing Sabbath at OzzFest last year, I have to say, Sabbra Cadabra does Sabbath better than Sabbath. It's no wonder these guys are highly revered all around the country.

If you're expecting to see a bunch of guys in flannel pumping out Sabbath covers, forget it. Sabbra Cadabra not only pays homage to Black Sabbath, they become Black Sabbath. Each of the band members looks like the Sabbath member he represents. The attention to detail is amazing, from the authentic wardrobe and stage props to the original type of equipment and instruments used by the band. Frontman Joe Donnelly has the Ozzy stage presence down pat, from the gestures (gotta love those peace signs) to the accent to the tattoos (yes, Joe was really inked with Ozzy's tattoos). What's really eerie is that the crowd responds to Joe as if he was Ozzy. Joe has that certain charisma that really gets the audience going. The other members hold their own as the rest of the band, providing a solid foundation to back up Joe's Ozzy antics.

Of course the real reason to check out Sabbra Cadabra is the amazing recreation of the music of Black Sabbath. If you close your eyes, you'd swear you were at a Sabbath show. Whether you're an original Sabbath fan who wants to recapture the experience or a new fan who wants to get a taste of what a Sabbath show was like, Sabbra Cadabra fits the bill. Sabbra Cadabra performs all the classic Sabbath hits, spanning the first eight albums, like "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath," "N.I.B.," "Black Sabbath," "Fairies Wear Boots," "Supenaut," "Snowblind," "Sweet Leaf," "Into the Void," "Iron Man," "Paranoid," and my all time favorite, "War Pigs" (the song I got my first tattoo to.) And for the real hardcore Sabbath fans, Sabbra Cadabra even hits the more obscure tunes, like "Under the Sun," "St. Vitas Dance," "Sleeping Village," and "Wheels of Confusion." You'd be hard pressed to find a Sabbath fan who could find fault with the band's amazingly tight, true to form performance. The band brings to life the energy, excitement, magic and mysticism that is Black Sabbath, not to mention a note-for-note recreation of Sabbath's unique sound. Dan, Jeff, and Tom are all experienced, solid players who effortlessly capture the musical genius of Sabbath and Joe sounds exactly like Ozzy. Scary! Sabbra Cadabra is constantly playing all around the northeast, so you'll surely be able to find them at a venue near you. (See the upcoming dates at the end of this review, or call the Sabbra Cadabra hotline at 908-232-6028 for more information.) If you're interested in booking the band call 908-820-4588.

So, mark your calendar and go check out Sabbra Cadabra. If after seeing the band you're still not convinced that Sabbra Cadabra is the greatest Sabbath cover band that ever lived, I'm going to have to send Ozzy over to kick your butt.
